Just in case you haven’t noticed or looked at your utility bill lately, electricity and gas rates are going through the roof. Houses are expensive to heat in the winter and cool in the summer. Older houses built when energy costs were much lower than today can be just as expensive to heat and cool as a newer house built with cathedral ceilings and open floor plans. I think ultimately we’ll find out that the energy companies were behind all of the housing trends. Make the people think they are getting something more efficient. Once they’re in, hook them with the higher prices. Where are they going to go? Well, time to stick it to the man, start kicking the fat cats behind the scenes in the pants and start using less power.
One way to do this and to dress up a room at the same time is with a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are one of my favorite room accessories. I guess you could call it an appliance. Moving air around a room can help keep it cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Fans can pull the warm air that you spent your hard earned dollars heating down from the ceiling where nobody is benefiting from it. They can also pull the cool air up from the floor in the summer to keep the room cooler. Moving air will also help cool you down as well.
Ceiling fans are a great way to dress up a room as well. They can also provide an additional light fixture without taking up floor or table space. Styles are countless. Like anything, you get what you pay for. Sometimes the cheap one on sale at the hardware store or home center will do the trick. If you are looking for something in the bedroom, you may want to look into the higher end ranges. I don’t know about you, I like having a fan on at night, but I also like to have things quiet. The clicking of a cheap fan motor is nothing short of Chinese water torture. Who knows, it may be white noise to others. The choice is up to you.
